How to turn a pentest report into action

Move from findings to assigned fixes and follow-up.

Read the executive summary first

Identify the business processes and information that could be affected. Ask how the findings relate to existing safeguards, asset exposure and operational priorities. A technical severity rating helps triage but does not replace business judgement.

Assign responsibility

Give each finding an owner, target date and tracked action. Record affected systems, agreed fixes, dependencies and temporary controls. Avoid copying sensitive evidence into tickets that have wider access than the report.

Fix the cause where possible

Look for repeated patterns such as inconsistent permissions, weak account controls or unsafe defaults. A shared fix may address several findings, but confirm the effect on each affected system.

Verify and keep the limits clear

Agree retesting scope, evidence and timing with the provider. A retest checks the agreed fixes; it is not automatically a new full assessment. Track any accepted risks and remaining exclusions, and plan another assessment after material changes.
